Preparing for your Colonic
What to expect
When you arrive at Encompass Health Clinic, you will be taken into our private Colonic room where we will discuss what you hope to accomplish through Colon Hydrotherapy. You will then be instructed how to insert the sterile disposable rectal tube into your rectum and given a disposable sheet to cover yourself. We also offer you an electrolyte and mineral drink beforehand to support your session. During the session we will instruct, monitor and be available to assist you as needed. The flow of water from the gravity-fed column is controlled by the flow control switch. As mentioned above, we use water purified by an ultra-violet ozone water purification and filtration unit before it passes through the rectal tube, and gently into the rectum. Safe, purified, temperature-controlled water flows in. When you feel the need to release, the rectal tube will move to one side, inside the rectum and allow the softened faeces to flow into the shoot, passing through a clear viewing tube. An odour exhaust system ensures the area remains odour free. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes, but you need to allow approximately 60 minutes for the whole session.
During a typical colonic, approximately 30 litres of water will be transported in and out of the colon. This ebb and flow of water gently begins to soak and soften the faecal matter, allowing debris, gas and mucous to be eliminated. A good colonic is capable of removing the equivalent of about 10 normal bowel movements.
Most people don’t experience any pain during a colonic, just a feeling of fullness. However, a few people may experience a little discomfort during their first colonic in the form of minor cramping. The best way to reduce this is to just relax, deep breath and use our specialised massage tool provided for the abdomen. You will also be given an infrared crystal Biomat pad to cover your abdomen during the session. If any other issues appear, we also have a Homeopathic Practitioner available for help.
Preparing for a Colonic
Below is a list of suggestions to assist your colonic to be successful and as comfortable as possible.
For at least 2-3 days before the session.
Water is a fluid that helps you to fight any illness and is an important part of your immune system. Your body requires water to help digest your food and rid the body of waste. Water hydrates the body as well as thins the blood, flushes toxins, lubricates joints and muscles, supports healthy glowing skin, burns calories and fat, and reduces risk of infections.
Please drink 3 litres of fluids (water, fresh juice, herbal tea) daily as this will help soften your stools. Do not drink coffee or soda as these caffeinated drinks have a dehydrating effect on the body.
Pre-Diet for Cleansing the Colon
For 2-3 weeks prior to your first colonic, strive to eat a healthy diet which contains at least ⅓ raw foods (especially fresh organic or pesticide-free fruit and organic salads) in addition to home prepared meals made with fresh, whole, organically grown foods. Slowly increasing the amount of raw foods in the diet provides healthy bulk to the stool, gentle intestinal stimulation and cleansing in addition to an abundance of raw enzymes.
Also, during this prelude, try to limit animal flesh foods (red meat, poultry, fish, etc.) to once per day only (or less, if possible) and eliminate refined sugars and stimulants. This allows the body to alkalize at a more rapid rate and lightens the digestive enzyme stress. This 2-3 week prelude allows the time for the gastrointestinal tract to heal and become more regular.
It is very important that bowel eliminations become regular (at least 2-3 complete, healthy bowel elimination per day). It is also important to avoid meat, nuts, and eggs for 2 days prior to your sessions to avoid any heavy proteins slowing up the process of elimination.
Plan to do some exercise either the day of or day prior to having a colonic if you are not exercising daily. Swim, walk, bike ride, run, dance, garden, clean, or practice yoga or pilates. Rebounding (bouncing on a mini trampoline) is fabulous for toning the colon and other organs as well as for stimulation of the lymphatic system. Exercise stimulates intestinal circulation.
Please arrive on time or early without a rushed manner as the intestines work best when they are relaxed. Laughing, breathing, exercising, listening to soothing music, and being in a supportive loving environment all help to relax the nervous system. Regime: How often needed
The frequency of visits varies from person to person and depends on your goals, medical history, and intestinal health. Your medical history will be reviewed with you, offering recommendations where needed, but the choice is always yours. However, we recommend three sessions to begin, within three to five days. The reason for this is because there is over a metre of large bowel to cleanse, and this requires a minimum of three sessions to entirely cleanse the colon. At the end of each session, you will receive an aloe supplement to soothe the digestive track and a probiotic drink to replace the beneficial bacteria. You will also be advised to purchase electrolyte ampoules to take daily and support you for the 3 days.
Once the colon is clean, it is advisable to have a colonic once a month. It is also beneficial in dealing with a healing reaction from candida or parasite die-off, to use herbal and/or homeopathic remedies advised by your Health Practitioner. Your sense of wellbeing is often dramatically improved with the colonic process. You feel lighter and more energetic, as your body can again assimilate food in the colon and better defend itself against disease. Natural peristalsis, tone and regularity are restored, and many serious diseases may be averted through this gentle, sterile, scientific technique. Colonics are a key factor in the restoration of the body’s natural balance or what we call good health.
Your normal intestinal flora that is slightly disturbed from colonics will replenish within days, hence why we offer a probiotic drink after your sessions, and we also highly recommend taking a daily probiotic if you choose. Cleansing the Colon will help bring the acid-alkaline ratio back into balance. In this environment, the friendly bacteria will again thrive, and disease-causing bacteria will find it difficult to develop.

After Your Colon Hydrotherapy Treatment
Apart from the incredible health benefits you will receive from your colonic sessions, you may notice each colonic can be a different experience from the last. Depending on how your body responds after your colonic, you may experience anything from a burst of energy; (this is most common) through to feeling a little light-headed or drowsy. If after a particular session you start to feel tired and/or nauseous, relax as this is quite normal. Your body is processing and eliminating the toxins that are being stirred up and released. Listen to your body and if you need to rest, do so. This feeling will pass. Nausea may also be soothed by sipping ginger tea. Occasionally, you may experience mild bloating after your colonic due to the infused water gradually soaking into old material in the colon, softening it and causing it to swell a little prior to elimination.
While cleansing, you may also experience symptoms like headaches or diarrhoea from time to time. This can simply be a sign of intestinal putrefaction and toxins being released and will often clear from having a colonic. This is also a sign that more cleansing is needed so don’t stop now!
Over time Colon Hydrotherapy greatly improves peristaltic function, by exercising and toning the colon muscle. Many people do not have bowel movements from natural peristaltic functioning due to poor diet, lifestyle and stress; instead, they have material simply pushed through the colon by the next meal in the queue.
